How Google Search Really Works from the Back End

Behind every search and every simple page of results for that search, there is a complex system, carefully crafted into an ever-changing program and process. There are over 60 trillion pages online right now and 100 billion web searches each month. Each Google search query travels an average of 1,500 miles between data centers to get the best results for that search in 1/10th of a second.

After seeing these substantial numbers, you might ask yourself, how does search really work from the back end? Here’s the answer:

STEP ONE: Every search begins with a web query (a keyword or direct search). This gets the process going and drives the remaining steps.

STEP TWO: Google navigates the search by crawling the world wide web. It’s like a scavenger hunt, only 100x more complex.

STEP THREE: Google follows links and snippets of information about “Marketing, Dublin Ohio” or “Whiteboard Marketing” from page to page.

STEP FOUR: A report is produced based off of crawling results. This report appears in the form of a Google search results page.

STEP FIVE: Google then stores and tracks all of the data in THE INDEX (100+ trillion gigabytes).

STEP SIX: The query results are sorted and ranked using 200+ factors, including site and page quality, synonyms of keywords, consistency, accuracy, and spelling of information.

What does this mean for your business? Making sure your business information is correct is more important than ever. Google indexes 250+ directories on the web to find your business information. Every individual directory you submit to is another chance to be found online, so it’s important to make sure you’re accurately listed in every directory possible.
